Stephanie McIntosh was born on July 5, 1985, in Malvern, Victoria. Her father is John McIntosh, and her mother is Sue McIntosh, a former ABC newsreader and TV actress. Katherine and Olivia McIntosh are McIntosh’s two older sisters. Jason Donovan, her half-brother from her mother’s previous marriage to actor Terence Donovan, is an actor and singer.
McIntosh attended Firbank and then Melbourne Girls Grammar School, where she “was involved in every play and musical and did drama classes,” before leaving in Year 12 to pursue her acting career. She worked in a musical as a teenager with Tommy Dassalo, a stand-up comedian and part-time dancer.
McIntosh’s music career began in 2004 when her rendition of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” was included on the album The Spirit of Christmas 2004. She recorded her first demo single, “Happiest Day of My Life,” in March 2005.
McIntosh signed a multi-album contract with Universal Music Australia in April 2006.
The two years McIntosh spent working on the album were turned into a reality TV show called The Steph Show, which was produced by Tom Nichols and Arnon Woolfson. The show premiered on Network Ten on July 28, 2006, the day before the release of her debut single, “Mistake,” and ended on September 15, 2006, the date the music video for her second single Tightrope was released.
