An English musician named Simon John Charles Le Bon rose to prominence as the lead vocalist and lyricist for the new wave band Duran Duran and its offshoot Arcadia.
He received three Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors for his contributions to British music, including the prestigious honor for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
Le Bon used to work as a theatre porter at Northwick Park Hospital Accident & Casualty. He was also a member of the punk band Dog Days while attending Harrow School of Art.
During this time, he also performed in television commercials and theatre shows such as Tom Brown’s School Days on London’s West End.
In 1978, Le Bon worked in a kibbutz, or collective community, in Israel’s Negev desert. He afterward returned to England to study drama at the University of Birmingham. It was around this time that he met the developing band Duran Duran in 1980.
Duran Duran was founded in 1978 by boyhood friends John Taylor and Nick Rhodes, as well as singer-songwriter Stephen Duffy. However, after a year, Duffy left, unsure of the band’s potential success.
Following Duffy’s departure, the band went through several lineup changes before settling on a guitarist and drummer. The missing component in their powerful pop sound laced with disco, funk, and electronic elements, built on a strong rock rhythm section, was a charismatic singer.
