Sheldon Whitehouse stars in Kavanaugh drama; Robert Flanders pans him.
Whether the exchange with Kavanaugh becomes an indelible moment in Senator Whitehouse’s career is yet to be seen, but it’s already made. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate . on his vote against the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh he speaks during a Senate Judiciary Committee .”Yes, the Brett Kavanaugh hearings got underway this morning.
Whether the exchange with Kavanaugh becomes an indelible moment in Senator Whitehouse’s career is yet to be seen, but it’s already made waves.
PROVIDENCE — In all his years as the state attorney general, a top federal prosecutor and now a sitting U.S. senator, Sheldon Whitehouse could never have imagined himself on national TV talking about “boofing.”
Yet there he was on Thursday, questioning Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh about entries in his high-school yearbook as the Judiciary Committee tried to get answers about Christine Blasey Ford’s sexual-assault allegation dating to that era.
Whitehouse says he was left unsatisfied by Kavanaugh’s truthfulness — “boofing” meant flatulence, Kavanaugh said — and feeling as if the hearing was yet another sign of the continued erosion of the judiciary’s credibility.
“He was far from being fully truthful, and in fact, Judge Kavanaugh would have been pretty harsh with witness Kavanaugh if Judge Kavanaugh was obliged to endure the behavior of witness Kavanaugh in a courtroom,” Whitehouse said in an interview. “No judge would put up with that nonsense for a moment.”
Kavanaugh, who is now an appeals court judge, has denied the sexual-assault allegation.
Another Rhode Islander was closely watching Whitehouse’s questioning of Kavanaugh: Whitehouse’s opponent in the Nov. 6 general election, former Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice Bob Flanders. Whitehouse, Flanders said, had made a “buffoon” of himself.
With legal and judicial issues at the forefront of national politics right now, Rhode Islanders are in a unique position when they go to the ballot box in November to pick their senator: They’ll decide between two men who have reached the heights of Rhode Island’s legal world, conversant in issues not just about the Supreme Court’s legitimacy but about how to evaluate old allegations, and whether a witness under oath is fudging the truth. Whitehouse, a Democrat, and Flanders, a Republican, will face off on Nov. 6.
In comments in the days following the hearing, they both used the same legal-hued dismissal at various points: Not credible. Whitehouse used it to refer to Kavanaugh; Flanders used it to refer to Whitehouse.
For Whitehouse, his stand on the issue, and his pledge to Ford to investigate the issue further if Democrats take power in the narrowly divided Senate or the House has galvanized his supporters. At a rally with former Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday, the crowd of Democrats at the Rhode Island Convention Center erupted in cheers when he said, “What a week it has been.”
Sheldon Whitehouse Party
He belongs to a democratic political party. “The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Republican Party. Tracing its heritage back to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison’s Democratic-Republican Party, the modern-day Democratic Party was founded around 1828 by supporters of Andrew Jackson, making it the world’s oldest active political party”.
