Sharyn Ghidella Today Show

Ghidella, understood to be upset at how she was treated at Nine, will join Channel 7 in Brisbane as a weekend news anchor.

In a day of change on Australian TV, Nine has let go of the rights to air content from the US version of 60 Minutes to Channel 10, in a cost-cutting measure which will affect its local flagship current affairs program.

The 60 Minutes deal means Ten will have access to more than 100 stories from the US program each year, which the network plans to package together as celebrity specials in 2007.

Ghidella has been a constant during the tumultuous years on the Today show. It is understood to have been disgruntled after program executives dumped her from reading the short-lived 6 am bulletin.

Nine’s decision to end its news programming deal with US network CBS will also see it lose its number one day-time program Dr. Phil and The Late Show with David Letterman.

Meanwhile, Channel 10 has won the rights to the 2007 Rugby World Cup. But in a blow to the network Sports Tonight host Ryan Phelan is leaving Ten, the first major scalp in a local raid by US sports network, ESPN. Triple M’s Russell Barwick and WSFM’s Travis Winks have also auditioned for the sports news and information program targeted at Australian and New Zealand audiences, based in Connecticut.

Channel 10 yesterday revealed more of its plans for next year, with drama Tripping Over to return next year, despite lackluster ratings on debut last month.

The replacement

She was overlooked for the summer hosting gig to replace the pregnant Jessica Rowe. That spot went to Sarah Murdoch, who will make her TV presenter debut for a four-week stint alongside entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins.
