Scott Kirby Biography

United Airlines announced on December 12, 2019 that its current CEO, Oscar Munoz, has decided to resign this spring.

Since joining America Airlines in 1995, Kirby has been promoted and assigned additional responsibilities as Senior Planning and Planning Director. He was promoted to Vice President of Planning in 1997 and was appointed Vice President of the Revenue Agency a year later.

By 2000, Kirby had been appointed Senior Vice President of Computer Software Systems in the Western United States, and was appointed President of the newly established US Airways in September 2006. And now he has been appointed CEO of United Airlines.

Kirby earned a Computer Science and Operations Research degree from the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs in 1989. He later earned a master’s degree in engineering from George Washington University in Washington, DC.

After graduation, before joining American West Airlines, he worked for Saber Decision Technologies (SDT), a subsidiary of AMR Corp., serving the travel and transportation industry. Prior to joining SDT, Kirby worked as a budget analyst for three years at the U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Secretary of Defense.
