Sammy Peralta Sosa is a Dominican American former professional baseball player with a Haitian descent, who played in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for 19 seasons.

Early Life

Sammy Sosa was born in Dominican Republic on the 12th of November, 1968 in the city of San Pedro de Macorís. He is partially of Haitian descent.

While growing up he was given the nickname “Mikey” by his maternal grandmother. Mikey is what his family and friends call him.

Career

On June 16, 1989, Sosa made his Major league debut with the Texas Rangers spotting the No 17 jersey and leading off as the starting left fielder.

In 1998, Sosa and his colleague, Mark McGwire attained nationwide fame for their home run-hitting prowess in pursuit of Roger Maris’ home run record.

While playing for the Cubs, he became a 7 time All-Star while achieving several team records.

During his time with the Rangers, he hit his 600th career home run, becoming the fifth player in the history of Major League Baseball to achieve this feat.

Among foreign born players of the MLB, Sosa is the second all-time in home runs. In 2001, he achieved a great fear by becoming one of the only three players of National League since 1900 to reach 160 RBIs in a season.

Also, he is the only player to hit a 60 or more home runs in a season thrice.

Personal Life

Sammy Sosa is happily married to Sonia Rodríguez, a former Dominican TV dancer and their union is blessed with six children.

In 2009, when Sosa appeared at a Music Awards Show looking lighter in complexion than he was a few months back, it caused a little controversy as some people thought he was ill or that he hated being dark skinned.

But he later cleared the air on the subject by revealing that he used a bleaching cream which softens and lightens his skin every night before going to bed.
