In January 2018, Lizza returned back to work at CNN after being suspended over sexual misconduct allegations. CNN stated that;

“Upon learning of The New Yorker’s decision to sever ties with Ryan Lizza in December, CNN pulled him from future on-air appearances while the network conducted an extensive investigation into the matter. Based on the information provided and the findings of the investigation, CNN has found no reason to continue to keep Mr. Lizza off the air,” the statement reads.

Ryan Lizza Fired

At the end of 2017, Lizza was suspended from CNN pending an investigation and fired from his full-time position at The New Yorker in December 2017. The New Yorker released a statement saying;

“The New Yorker recently learned that Ryan Lizza engaged in what we believe was improper sexual conduct,” a spokesperson for the publication said at the time of Lizza’s dismissal. “We have reviewed the matter and, as a result, have severed ties with Lizza. Due to a request for privacy, we are not commenting further.”

In his response, he said he was dismayed that The New Yorker decided to characterize a respectful relationship with a woman I dated as somehow inappropriate without citing any violated company policy. He said;  “I love the New Yorker, my home for the last decade, and I have the highest regard for the people who work there. But this decision, which was made hastily and without a full investigation of the relevant facts, was a terrible mistake.”

Ryan Lizza Career

Ryan began his career at the Center for Investigative Reporting in San Francisco. He worked on the Frontline documentary Hot Guns. He joined The New Republic as a Senior Editor in 1998. While there, he covered the Florida recount, the Bush White House, the 2004 presidential election, and Bill Clinton’s impeachment for a period of 9 years.

He wrote about politics for The Atlantic, including one of the first national magazine profiles of Barack Obama in 2004. From 2004 to 2006 Ryan worked as a contributing editor for New York magazine, where he wrote about national politics. From 2002 to 2007, he also regularly contributed to The New York Times. In 2006 and 2007 Lizza was a correspondent for GQ.

While working as the Washington correspondent for The New Yorker magazine in 2007, Lizza covered the White House and presidential politics and wrote the magazine’s popular “Letter From Washington” column. During the 2008 U.S. presidential election, he covered the elections for The New Yorker and wrote an extended profile of Barack Obama’s career in Illinois politics. The article was later nominated for a National Magazine Award in 2009.

During the campaign, a cartoon in the New Yorker supposedly caused the Obama campaign to exclude Lizza from Obama’s campaign plane, with a lack of space cited as the reason. His report on a conversation with White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci led to Scaramucci’s dismissal from the post in July 2017.

Lizza has been highly praised by the likes of Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News who referred to him as “required reading” for those interested in the American political scene. He was also included by The Washingtonian magazine on its list of Washington’s “50 Top Journalists” and described him as a writer who “change[s] the way readers see the world.” in June 2009.
