Russia To Execute Biometric Data Collection For Foreign Visitors

Beginning on 1st December 2024, Russia will acquire biometric data for international travelers entering the nation via Moscow’s significant airports. This program intends to promote federal protection and more effectively handle migratory flows.

Collection Of Biometric Data Starts On 1st December

From 1st December 2024, Russia will go into a trial stage for collecting biometric data from foreign visitors. This stage will remain until 30th June 2026, concentrating initially on four major Moscow airports:

  • Zhukovsky
  • Sheremetyevo
  • Vnukovo
  • Domodedovo

Furthermore, the pilot scheme will attach the Mashtakovo border crossing in the Orenburg territory.

What Information Will Be Collected

Border control will need international citizens and stateless persons landing at these access points to offer facial pictures and fingerprints. This action is

an aspect of Russia’s technique to improve federal safety and facilitate handling foreign landings.

Development Plans For Biometric Collection In 2025

By 30th June 2025, Russia intends to extend biometric data collection to all nationwide border checkpoints. Travelers eligible for visa-free access to Russia can present their biometric information on time via a devoted mobile application, simplifying the border control procedure.

Exclusions To The Biometric Data Conditions

Specific groups will be excluded from offering biometric information. These have to do with the following:

  • Nationals of Belarus
  • The staff of identified foreign institutions and their households
  • Kids below the age of six
  • Accredited diplomatic and embassy staff

Russia To Offer Multilingual Guidance For Travelers

To ensure understanding and accessibility for foreign visitors, the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Media will publish detailed policies on the new processes.

These directions will be available in several languages through the national public service portal, including Chinese, Kazakh, Arabic, English, Uzbek, French, Tajik, Kyrgyz, and Spanish.

A Step Towards Improved Security

The initiative observes global trends in acquiring biometric technology for border control. Russian officers emphasize that similar standards exist in other territories, including the Schengen Region.

According to the Ministry’s press service, biometric data collection can improve security by offering detailed information on incoming travelers.

Future Of Biometric Data Collection In Russia

If the trial stage ascertains success,  Russia intends to make biometric data collection an indefinite condition for foreign visitors. This stage is viewed as a route to match global activities, making trips secure and efficient.

Russia’s merger of biometric information collection portrays a more comprehensive global effort to modernize border safety while promoting easier access and exit procedures for foreign travelers. The result of this experimental stage will specify whether the nation will embrace biometric technology for border management after 2026.
