Rita Moreno born Rosa Dolores Alverío Marcano; is a Puerto Rican actress, dancer and singer with a career spanning over 70 years. She is most notably known for her acting prowess as  supporting roles in the 1956 and 1961 musical films ‘The King and I’ and ‘West Side Story’, as well as her role on the children’s television series ‘The Electric Company’ from 1971- 1977. The actress also had a supporting role on the 1997–2003 TV drama Oz. She is also one of 23 people who have achieved what is called the Triple Crown of Acting, with individual competitive Academy, Emmy and Tony awards for acting. Moreno is one of the few artists and only Latino to have won all four major annual American entertainment awards: an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy; a Tony and most recently a Peabody.

Rita’s mother Rosa María , is a seamstress. She was 17 at the time of her birth, was raised in nearby Junco.sher father Mr. Francisco José “Paco” Alverío, was a farmer. While young; she was nicknamed “Rosita”. in 1936, Rita and her  mother moved to New York City. She has a younger brother called Francisco Marcano. Rita adopted the surname of her first stepfather, Edward Moreno, Rosa Maria’s second husband.

Soon after arriving in New York; Rita began her first dancing lessons with a Spanish dancer  who was a paternal uncle of film star Rita Hayworth known as “Paco Cansino”. When she was 11 years old, her interest in film started to show when she lent her voice to Spanish language versions of American films. Throughout the 1950s, the actress had started appearing in movies;usually in small roles, including in the The Toast of New Orleans (1950) and Singin’ in the Rain (1952), in which she played the starlet “Zelda Zanders”. In March 1954, Moreno was featured on the cover of Life Magazine with the caption “Rita Moreno: An Actress’s Catalog of Sex and Innocence”.

Her prowess landed her the role of Anita in  the 1961 Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins’ film adaptation of Leonard Bernstein’s and Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking Broadway musical titled West Side Story, which had been played by Chita Rivera on Broadway.Due to her acting prowess on the musical, Moreno won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for that role.

In 2018, Moreno starred  and executive produced the reboot of West Side Story along with Steven Spielberg.

Soon after the appearing in The West side Story,Moreno garnered yet another major role in the 1961 film Summer and Smoke.

After taking an acting hiatus,she made her return to film in the 1968 film ‘The Night of the Following Day’  with fellow actor Marlon Brando, following through with a role in the 1969 film Popi . Additionally, she was featured on the 1969 film ‘Marlowe’  where she featured alongside James Garner. Moreno also featured on the 1971 film titled Carnal Knowledge as well as the 1976 film ‘The Ritz’ . Another notable role that the actress featured in was in the 1981 hit film The Four Seasons . Since then, she has still shown interest in film and lent her voice, for the 2014 film Rio 2.
