Celebrity rapper Rich Chigga and/or Rich Brian was born humbly as Brian Imanuel on September 21, 1999 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Of Chinese-Indonesian ancestry, he grew up with his three siblings in West Jakarta, a middle-to-lower class neighborhood in the Indonesian capital. Details about his parents are unknown, however, his father is believed to be a lawyer. Sonia Eryka is a fashion influencer and Roy Leonard is a DJ.
Rich Chigga was homeschooled in his formative years. While growing up, he started his entertainment career through social media doing photoshopping and posting it on Twitter. He has followed this example enormously, notably when he published a photoshopped photo of himself and former US President Barack Obama. It was around him when he was 11.
He ended up moving to the Vine video platform where he posted short videos and dark comedy skits on the platform which further stoked his popularity. The young boy soon discovered YouTube, which not only brought him a huge following, but also the platform where he learned to speak and rap in vernacular American suburban English. Prior to this, the scrawny homeschooled boy only spoke Bhasa, a local Indonesian language, and all of his previous videos and comedy sketches were in Bhasa. Rich Chigga learned to rap by listening to rappers like Drake, 2 Chainz, Macklemore, Childish Gambino, Tyler and Kanye West. He wrote his first official song in 2014 and in February 2016 he released his hit song “Dat$tick” which gained him great popularity and acceptance in the world of celebrity rappers. The YouTube video for the song was rather simply made and featured with him and a few others. There wasn’t much of a visible video effect in the song, perhaps its rawness was what endeared it to many fans around the world.
