Ray William Johnson Career

Acting and films

In May of 2014, Johnson was cast in the independent film Who’s Driving Doug. He was cast as a new driver for a crippled hermit played by RJ Mitte, a former Breaking Bad character. Michael Carnick, who uses a wheelchair due to a rare disease, wrote the film, which also stars Paloma Kwiatkowski.

In February 2016, the film Who’s Driving Doug was released. Johnson previously appeared in Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie in a minor role. He appeared in a series of advertisements for DiGiorno pizzas in January 2016, alongside Colleen Ballinger, DeStorm Power, and American football player Clay Matthews III.

Johnson is also the co-founder of Mom & Pop Empire, a film production firm with former Equals Three host Kaja Martin. They’re presently working on a documentary aimed at exposing cable monopolies.

Johnson and Martin, as well as Supergravity Pictures’ Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt, are co-producers. Johnson is set to serve as the film’s narrator. Mark and Jay Duplass previously co-produced a film called Manson Family Vacation with Mom & Pop Empire.

The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest in 2015, and Netflix quickly acquired the film’s distribution rights. Johnson and Martin are also working on a separate film starring Johnson and a long-form movie version of their web series Booze Lightyear as part of Mom & Pop Empire.

Equals Three

In April 2009, Johnson started uploading videos to his “Ray William Johnson” YouTube channel. The channel was the first on YouTube to exceed 5 million subscribers in 2011.

In addition, the channel garnered approximately 2 billion cumulative views. Johnson began producing films from his New York City apartment, but in 2011, he secured a partnership with Maker Studios to shoot videos on location in Culver City, California.

Johnson worked at Maker Studios on a Spanish-language version of the show called Igual a Tres, as well as a series of hilarious animated music videos called “Your Favorite Martian.”

Johnson announced his departure from Maker Studios in October 2012, claiming that he had been pressured to sign a new contract that would limit his access to his AdSense account and confiscate 40% of his earnings from the series.

Johnson would also have had to give up half of his intellectual property rights to the show and his other animated web project, Your Favorite Martian, under the terms of the contract.

Johnson started his own production business, Equals Three Studios, in November 2012, and continued to produce Equals Three. That same month, the sitcom Your Favorite Martian came to an end.

Johnson indicated in December 2013 that he would be quitting Equals Three soon to focus on other projects. His final episode as a presenter (titled “THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING”) aired on March 12, 2014, and lasted approximately 14 minutes.

At the time of Johnson’s departure, the channel had over 10 million subscribers and 2.6 billion cumulative views. In July 2014, Robby Motz took over as host of the show.

After Motz’s departure in July 2015, Kaja Martin, a frequent collaborator of Johnson’s, took over as host, however, Martin was replaced by Carlos Santos in December 2015.

In 2015, Johnson sued Jukin Media for requesting the removal of 40 Equals Three videos that sampled their content. The case was later settled. The series featured numerous celebrity guests, including Robin Williams, Sarah Silverman, Gabriel Iglesias, John Cho, and Jason Biggs.

Scripted series
Riley Rewind, Johnson’s first scripted series, premiered in December 2013 on Facebook before making the transition to YouTube. The story centered around a teen who possessed a unique time-shifting ability.

It was released in five sections, with a total running time of around 50 minutes. Johnson announced in 2015 that the series has gotten 10 million views on Facebook. Johnson was in talks with FX Networks about a scripted series based on his life earlier in 2013.

Johnson has a script commitment from the network. Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller were supposed to write the script.
