Randall Stuart Newman, an American singer-songwriter, arranger, composer, and pianist, was born on November 28, 1943. He is renowned for his non-rhotic Southern dialect, early Americana-influenced songs (sometimes with mordant or sarcastic lyrics), and a number of film scores.

The Newman song revue Maybe I’m Doing It Wrong made its debut in 1982 at the Astor Place Theatre in New York City and thereafter traveled to various locations across the country. The cast included Mark Linn-Baker, Deborah Rush, and Treat Williams.

Newman is adept at performing literary material on stage. He adapted Goethe’s Faust for Randy Newman’s Faust, a concept album and musical, in the 1990s.

During the book’s 1995 La Jolla Playhouse performance, he asked David Mamet to help with a revision before relaunching it in 1996 on the mainstage of the Chicago Goodman Theatre. The musical only had one performance in 2014 at City Center in New York City.
