Rain Phoenix Family, Parents, and Siblings

Rain Joan of Arc Bottom was born in Crockett, Texas, to John Lee Bottom and Arlyn Sharon (née Dunetz) as their second child. Her mother was born in New York to Russian Jewish parents. Her father was a California native.
Her mother relocated to California before Phoenix was born, where she met Phoenix’s father while hitchhiking. They married in 1969 and became missionaries in South America for The Children of God. Phoenix began singing there when he was three years old, accompanied by his older brother River on guitar.
They’d perform on the streets of Caracas, Venezuela while passing out Children of God flyers. The family moved to California so that the children might pursue careers in the entertainment industry.
Phoenix and her brothers used to perform in front of large audiences on the streets of West Los Angeles. Arlyn got a job at NBC and eventually found an agent for the five Phoenix kids. On the show Real Kids, Phoenix performed with his brother River as an audience warm-up act (1982).

Following that, she appeared in other TV shows, including an episode of Amazing Stories in 1986 (when she was billed as Rainbow Phoenix) and Family Ties in 1987.

Phoenix also starred alongside Ally Sheedy in the 1987 feature picture Maid to Order. Phoenix returned to her musical roots at the age of 15, forming Aleka’s Attic with her then-17-year-old brother River.
River composed the music and lyrics with bassist Josh McKay, and Rain sang backing. Gainesville, Florida-based band landed engagements in and around their area.
River’s career had taken off by this time, and the band was frequently put on hold to accommodate River’s hectic schedule. Aleka’s Attic earned a development contract with Island Records in 1988, and in 1989, the track “Across The Way” was included on a benefit album for the animal rights organization PETA.
They went on a tour of east coast clubs and colleges in 1991. Phoenix was on the set of her brother River’s eighth film, My Own Private Idaho, at the time. River introduced her to filmmaker Gus Van Sant, who thought she’d be great for a role in his future movie, a film adaptation of Tom Robbins’ cult novel, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. She was cast with Uma Thurman as head cowgirl Bonanza Jellybean.

Rain Phoenix’s Brother: River Phoenix’s death

A few months after the film’s completion, Phoenix flew to Los Angeles with her brother Joaquin to meet River during a break from Dark Blood. On the evening of October 30, 1993, they set out, joined by River’s girlfriend Samantha Mathis, for a night at the Los Angeles club The Viper Room. It would be the last evening Rain would spend with her brother; he died later that night from, according to the coroner’s report, “acute multiple drug intoxication,” namely an overdose of heroin and cocaine, a concoction called a “speedball”.

Rain dealt simultaneously with the loss of her older brother and the media circus that followed. Aleka’s Attic, by that time consisting of a different line-up, had been working on an album that River had been funding himself. The album was near completion so Phoenix began the long process of mixing and producing the scraps of recordings. The album has never been released.

In 1994, Phoenix went into the studio with R.E.M. to record backup vocals for the song “Bang and Blame,” which was included on the album Monster, which was dedicated to River.
Phoenix joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their One Hot Minute tour in 1995 as a backup singer. River was good friends with Chili Peppers bassist Flea, who appears in My Own Private Idaho, and was present the night he died.
The song “Transcending” was written as a tribute to River. She also appears in R.E.M.’s “At My Most Beautiful” video. Phoenix joined The Causey Way, a punk/new wave band that includes her younger sisters Summer and Liberty, in 1997.

They disbanded in 2001 after the release of two albums and two EPs. Phoenix returned to acting in 1998 with parts in I Woke Up Early the Day I Died (1998), O (2001), Harry and Max (2004), and Hitch (2005).
