Career
Like the man who finished sixth overall in the top 50 internationally, the Red Sox signed Devers as a 16-year-old free agent to a $1.5 million deal. He started with the minor leagues and made his debut for rookie club Dominican Summer League Red Sox on May 31, 2014.
While with the league, he played in all 28 games, hitting base almost the entire game. He batted .467 and slipped .800 in eight games and continued to increase in value as he led the DSL Sox with three home runs, a .337/.445/.538 slash line and 21 RBI.
Devers was promoted to the Gulf Coast League RedSox of the Rookie Class GCL. His base stat of .983 plus slugging was recognized as a rare occurrence at the DSL level and his .533 slug average has exceeded the mark of an everyday player for the Red Sox since 2005.
His overall scoring for the 2014 season was .322/.404/.506 line 57 RBI and 7 homers in 70 games across two minor league levels. He also finished tied for third in the GCL with 36 RBIs, and was top-10 in .312 batting average, boosting his MLB ranking of Red Sox prospects from 13th to 5th.
Devers was named to the 2014 GCL Playoff All-Star Team to end the season. He was selected for the South Atlantic League All-Star Game after joining Low Class A Greenville Drive in 2015. It was then announced that the Dominican would make the World Team roster in the All- Star Futures Game.
This was followed by an invitation from the Boston Red Sox to attend their 2016 spring training, after which he was promoted to High-A Salem Red Sox to start the regular season. At the time, his MBL rating as a Red Sox player skyrocketed to number 2 and 14 overall.
The 2017 season saw his promotion to the Triple-APawtucket Red Sox on July 24, 2017, where he homered 2 times and hit .400 in 9 games. During that time, he started the season opener with the Portland Double-A Sea Dogs and completed 18 home runs in 77 games.
The exit of former franchise player PabloSandoval created room for the Devers’ promotion to the Boston Red Sox. He collected his first major league hit, a home run in the game against the Seattle Mariners. He finished the regular season (2017) batting .284 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 58 games. He had a .906 fielding percentage starting in 56 games at third base.
Devers hit his first career grand slam in April 18, in the game against the Los Angeles Angels to mark his 2018 season as the Red Sox’ third baseman. This was followed by a second grand slam in the game against the New York Yankees on June 30, making him the youngest player to hit a grand slam in a Red Sox–Yankees game that night, at 21 and 249 days.
His 3-game home win in the 6th inning in Game 5 of the 2018 ALCS became a deciding factor in sending his team to the World Series.
