Princess Chelsea Biography

Chelsea Nikkel, better known by her stage name Princess Chelsea, is a New Zealand experimental producer and musician from Auckland. She was a previous member of twee pop band The Brunettes and Auckland band Teenwolf. Chelsea is associated with the Lil’ Chief Records collective and is a part-time member of Auckland soul group The Cosbys and Disciples of Macca, a Paul McCartney covers band featuring The Brunettes, Ruby Suns, Bressa Creeting Cake and Lawrence Arabia and more recently performs as bass player in three piece rock n roll band ‘Hang Loose’. Her baroque musical style has been attributed to her classical training, and the New Zealand Herald praised her “angelic vocals and acerbic wit”. Her best known song, “The Cigarette Duet” received significant press exposure after its distinctive video went viral on YouTube in early 2012, recently reaching over 40 million views. This led to her being featured on The Guardian’s “New Band of the Day”.

Chelsea’s song “World Turns Grey” was remixed in a collaboration with the German electronic music producer, Robin Schulz. The remix is on the album Sugar released by Schulz in September 2015.

In August 2016, she made a cover of a song called “Cold Glass Tube” by The Reduction Agents, which is available on the album Waiting for Your Love: A Tribute to The Reduction Agents. The album was released on iTunes on 19 August.

Princess Chelsea Lil Golden Book

Lil’ Golden Book is the debut album by recording artist Princess Chelsea. It was released on 2 May 2011, through Lil’ Chief Records. The album was produced by Jonathan Bree and Chelsea Nikkel. The album tells the tale of life growing up as a teenager and young adult in New Zealand.

Nikkel stated that the album took nearly three years of production. The booklet features 15 pages designed by bandmate Brad Fafejta. The album is described as ‘when cute meets creepy’.

The album was named after Little Golden Books, which are a series of children’s books that started in the 1940s and are still being released today. She called her album “Lil’€™ Golden Book” instead of “Little Golden Book” as an attempt to prevent herself from getting sued, but also to pay homage to her record label Lil’ Chief.

Lil’ Golden Book received mostly positive reviews. The Sunday Star Times named it ‘album of the week’ and aptly described it as ‘when cute meets creepy’. Graham Reid has called it ‘mischievous and sharp’ and The New Zealand Herald has likened it to “growing pains in the happiest place on earth”. Louder Than War said “the quirky Monkey Eats Bananas is a thumping, jungle-beat track that was a huge hit on YouTube. KittySneezes described Nikkel’s vocals as “childlike tones” that “evoke the innocence necessary to make the simple lyrics work.”

One of the more popular songs from the album is ‘The Cigarette Duet’ with vocals from Jonathan Bree. The video was uploaded to YouTube in early 2011, recently reaching 30 million views. This led to her being featured on The Guardian’s ‘New Band of the Day’.
