Peter Sallis, OBE (born 1 February 1921) is a well-known British actor and entertainer. Despite the fact that he was born and raised in London, his two most famous performances require him to assume Northern accents and mannerisms. Sallis is most known for his portrayal as Norman Clegg in the British TV sitcom Last of the Summer Wine, which is set in a Yorkshire town.
He was the longest-serving member of the cast, participating in all 295 episodes from 1973 to 2010. Following the death of Kathy Staff in 2008, Sallis is one of just two remaining original cast members (the other being Jane Freeman). He also played Norman Clegg’s father in all 13 episodes of the prequel series First of the Summer Wine. From 1989 until 2010, Sallis was the voice of Wallace in the Wallace and Gromit films.
