Penalty For Lost Ball In Golf And New Rules

Penalty for lost ball in golf results in one penalty stroke and distance. The player has to play the next stroke from the previous spot.

In simple words, it means that the player will have to add another stroke as a penalty and has to let go of the distance that they could have achieved.

If the ball is lost while in play, you will have no choice whatsoever but to play another stroke from the exact spot where you played your last stroke.

The Rules are quite complex in golf compared to that of other sports. It also keeps on changing from time to time and players need to be updated with the rules as well as remember them.

When a player plays a stroke, they always have a fear of a lost ball as they are penalized for it. It could completely ruin their scorecard and as a result, their game.

Although there are several complex rules in golf, the Lost Ball Rules and the Out of Bounds Rules are so difficult to understand.

Rules Of Golf Out Of Bounds

Rules of golf out of bounds is a penalty of one stroke and distance. It also results in playing the next shot from the same place you took your previous shot.

It is actually a two-stroke penalty since you will be counting your shot that went OOB (1st shot). You then have to take the next shot in addition to the one-stroke penalty (2nd and 3rd shots). The penalty stroke has to be taken from the exact spot where you took your first shot (OOB shot).

An example to better understand the Rule would be that if you hit your tee shot Out of Bounds, you will have to return to the same spot to take the next shot along with a one-stroke penalty. It would be your third stroke off the tee.

The stroke and distance Rule when the ball goes out of bounds also has a loss of distance since the distance that you could have gained with an accurate shot is also lost.

General Area

If you hit a shot OOB from the general area, you play the next shot via a drop. You will be dropping the golf ball on the basis of a reference point. The reference point will be the spot from where you made your previous shot.

The rule suggests that the player can drop the ball one club length from the reference point. A point to remember is that the ball must not be dropped nearer to the hole and must be in the same course area as the reference point.

Provisional Ball

In case of any doubts regarding whether the ball is actually out of bounds or not as in some cases the OOB lines may be hidden by trees, the player needs to keep in mind to declare and hit a provisional ball.

The player needs to declare to his playing partners that they will be hitting a provisional ball. Failing to call the next shot will result in not being able to continue with the ball that was in play even if you find it out of bounds.

This is actually used to keep the pace of the play intact as the player that called the provisional ball will not have to go back to the spot he played his last stroke from.

When Is A Ball Out of Bounds In Golf?

The ball is out of bounds only when it is completely outside the boundary line of the course. The ball is still in bounds if the ball is slightly touching anything inside the boundary edge.

The ball will not be out of bounds if the ball is above the boundary edge or any other part of the course.

Decisions On The Rules Of Golf

The decisions on the Rules of Golf by the USGA and R%A in the 2023 edition have included some key changes. They are:

  • Modifications for Players with Disabilities

Rule 25 is a new introduction to the Rules and states that the modification provided is applicable to all competitions and all forms of play.

  • Use, Repair or Replacement of Club Damaged During Round

The amended Rule 4.1a(2) states that players are allowed to replace a club that has been damaged during play. The player will not be able to replace the club if it was damaged through abuse.

  • Ball Moved by Natural Forces

Rule 9.3 provides the ball is to be replaced if it moves to another area of the course after the ball was either dropped, placed, or replaced and is also to be followed if the ball comes to rest OOB.

  • Applying Penalties to Multiple Breaches of the Rules

Rule 1.3c(4) has also been amended which means that there will be fewer instances where more than one penalty will be applied.

  • Player Not responsible for Showing Handicap on Scorecard or Adding Up Scores

Rule 3.3b(4) states that players will no longer be required to show their handicap on their scorecard in the stroke play. The committee will be responsible for keeping tabs on the player’s handicap and will calculate the net score.

  • Substitution of Another Ball While Playing a Hole

The player will now be penalized one penalty stroke instead of the previously applied general penalty for playing an incorrectly substituted ball which falls under Rule 6.3b(3).

  • Other Help

Rule 10.2b has been rewritten to clarify and support the 2019 Rule. The Rules 10.2b(1) and (2) state that the player and their caddie or any other person will be prohibited from setting an object down that would aid the player with the line of play or help with other directional information.

The player will not be able to avoid a penalty even if they remove the object before the stroke is played.

  • Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence: Place from Where Ball Must Be Played

Rule 11.1b has been rewritten for clarity purposes and Rule 11.1b(2) has been amended which means that if the ball hits an insect, player, or the club used to make the stroke from the putting green, the ball is to be played as it lies. The stroke will not be replayed.

  • Penalties in Stableford

Rule 21.1c has been amended and states that the penalties will be applied to the hole in the same way as regular stroke play in relation to clubs, time of starting, and unreasonable delay.

How Many Penalty Strokes Are Added For A Lost Ball In Golf

A penalty of one stroke is added for a lost ball in golf. Rule 18 also states that the player is to return to the spot of the previous shot for the replay.

The stroke-and-distance relief is similar to the penalty followed for the rule of out of bounds. In case of the ball is lost, the player has to retake the shot from the same spot they took their previous shot along with the distance that they could have gained.

It is also actually a two-stroke penalty as it follows the same procedure of the OOB rule. There are only a few differences when it comes to characterizing what exactly is a lost ball.

Rule 18.2a states that a ball is declared as lost if it is not found within three minutes after the player and their caddie start searching for it. The balls sometimes get lost in trees, in the rough, bushes, and other areas surrounding the golf course.

Rules of Golf ball lost in leaves would provide a player only 3 minutes to search for it. The previous time to search was five minutes and was changed in 2019.

Believe it or not, players sometimes lose the ball even when the ball is in bounds. Sadly, if they fail to find the ball within the three-minute mark, they are to take the stroke and distance penalty.

The stroke-and-distance relief is applicable when:

  • The ball is lost In Bounds
  • The ball is lost in the Fairway
  • The ball is lost in the Hazard

If the player can not search for his ball that was supposed to be in the Fairway within three minutes, it will be classified as a lost ball and will be penalized.

Lateral relief or back-on-the-line relief is applied when the ball is in a penalty area. If it is virtually certain that it is in the red or yellow marked area or other hazard, the two rules are applied.

There are a few situations when the stroke-and-distance procedure is not applied. The player can replace the ball if:

  • The ball that had come to rest on the course was either moved by an outside force or played by another as a wrong ball.
  • The ball either comes to rest in or on a movable obstruction or an abnormal course such as temporary water, animal hole, etc.
  • Any person deliberately deflects or stops the ball.
