Maya requested her mother to perform in the series PEN15 where she would be playing a satirical version of herself in the Pilot. The mother was understandably surprised.
Mutsuko approved since she admires her daughter and wants to assist her in her professional enterprise. She was part of the contract when the show was picked up, which she assumed was a one-time occurrence.

Maya Erskine brother Taichi Erskine grew up with her in Los Angeles with their parents. Maya and Shuji have an age difference of five years.
Taichi is the elder brother of Maya as per their mother. As per his Linkedin, Taichi is a film and television video editor. He is an experienced editor with a demonstrated history of working in the Film and TV industry as well as the marketing and advertising industry.
Throughout his career, he has worked in many fields including Assistant Video Editor at ModOp in July 2012. From May 2011- May 2012 he worked as an Assistant Video Editor at Psyop.
He has also worked as a Freelance Video Editor at Oishii Creative, at Logan and Sons. He had also worked as a full-time film video editor at New Form Digital.
