Paul Michael Hill was one of the members of the Guildford Four who served time for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) bombings and the murder of British soldier Brian Shaw. The Guildford Four; Paul Hill, Gerry Conlon, Paddy Armstrong and Carole Richardson were wrongfully arrested in 1974 for a pub bomb. The police force tortured four Guildfords for the crime and caused misery. The police also forced them to point out that they signed the confessions.

However, two years after the arrest, the IRA’s Balcombe Street gang retained responsibility for the property. To his detriment, Paul Hill received the longest sentence ever handed down in an English court. Fortunately, after a national campaign on October 19, 1989, they were released after spending 15 years in prison.

Paul Michael Hill: Guildford Four and Blitz

In December 1974, police arrested three men and one woman, later named the Guildford Four. They were, along with Paul Hill, Gerry Conlon, Patrick Armstrong and Carole Richardson. Around the time of the attacks, Conlon had been in London, visiting his mother’s friend, Annie Maguire.

Police wrongly accused the Guildford Four of the October 1975 bombings and sentenced him to life in prison. In March 1976, the Maguire Seven were wrongfully accused of supplying bombing material and other aid and sentenced to four to fourteen years. The Guildford Four were imprisoned for 15 years, while Giuseppe Conlon died near the end of his third year of imprisonment.

Both sentences were overturned years later in the appellate courts after the Guildford Four’s sentences were shown to be based on coerced confessions, although police did not reveal evidence directly accusing the Four. During the “Balcombe Street Four” trial in February 1977, the four IRA members told their lawyers to “draw attention to the fact that four totally innocent people served significant sentences” for three bombings in Woolwich and Guildford. Both charges have never been filed against the Balcombe Street Five. The 1993 film In The Father’s Name is based on those events.
