Pat Collins News Man Book
Pat Collins, made some news himself yesterday, announcing that he’d written a memoir about his roughly 50-year career in journalism. We spoke with Collins about what Washingtonians can learn from the book, and what the writing process was like for the veteran TV newsman.
“Newsman,” was self-published. It’s currently available at Politics & Prose for $20. Collins doesn’t foresee a financial windfall from the effort. “I expect to make even on this,” he says. “But it’s good for the soul.”
The book is a Pat Collins “buffet.” The memoir will take readers through some aspects of Collins’s life that they may not be aware of, for example, his time serving in the armed forces during the Vietnam war. But much of the work will focus on what Collins is best known for: local crime reporting.
“Some of the stories are pretty graphic, but I didn’t want to weigh it down so much. I didn’t want people to go into therapy after reading the first three chapters,” he says. “So I moved things around; a little of this, a little of that. That’s why I call it like a buffet. So if you read something, and you didn’t like it, just turn about four pages you’ll find something else.”
Among the most chilling crime stories featured is the case of Dana Chisholm. Of all the crime stories he’s covered, Collins says it’s the unsolved murder cases that remain the most prominent in his memory. Take the 1995 case of Dana Chisholm, for example. “Chisholm was a young woman who came up from North Carolina,” he says. “and she got a job as like an administrative assistant at like a think tank downtown. And like many women who came to Washington, she came up to make a name for herself.
And she ended up getting murdered in an awful way in her basement apartment [not far from Rock Creek Park]. She had been murdered, she had been bathed, she was displayed, and the killer left a note on the scene.” says Collins, “it’s a hell of a mystery story and it was never ever solved.”
Pat Collins and John Oliver
John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” a weekly news comedy in the vein of “The Daily Show” but with lots more cussing edited together strings of footage that showcased Collins’ unique way of presenting stories with some rhythmic additions. Collins occupies a special place in D.C. news. And, it’s always fun to remember that time he dressed as a grape to interview a local student suspended for wearing a banana costume.
Pat Collins Grape
Covering an odd tale about a 14-year-old autistic boy who was handcuffed by police and suspended for running down the sidelines of a high school football game at halftime wearing a banana costume, Washington, D.C. reporter Pat Collins donned a grape suit and went out to get his story.
Speaking to Bryan Thompson, who pulled the prank on Sept. 14 and found himself at the center of a controversy over the school’s response, Collins’ sarcastic outrage seemed palpable. “School officials accused him of being disruptive and disrespectful,” Collins said. “Frankly, I don’t see what all the fuss is about.”
Thompson’s outrage at the punishment was shared by his fellow students, who began creating yellow t-shirts that read, “Free Banana Man!” So the school did what schools so often do when their authority is challenged: they banned the shirts, began confiscating them, and sent students to detention for supporting their classmates.
That’s when the American Civil Liberties Union got involved, telling the principal that her actions were unconstitutional. The school’s principal was ultimately forced to resign, and Thompson has since returned to his studies.
Pat Collins Snow Stick
Weather can be big news. Snow does what no enemy has done since the War of 1812: it brings Washington to a halt. When a storm hits, countless viewers turn to NBC4 to watch Collins, armed with his signature Pat Collins Snow Stick, a thick blue yardstick, out measuring the snowfall.
At 73, Collins has cut back to three days a week. He is writing a memoir. But he still loves putting a story together, and the station loves the way he attracts viewers with a depth of information and compelling storytelling that stands out from the competition.
