Earlier in May 2017, NewtonJohn announced that she had breast cancer that had returned and spread to her lower back. Initially, her back pain was misdiagnosed as sciatica. That was her third time-fighting breast cancer, the last being in 2013 and 1992.
Her cancer progressed to stage IV after spreading to her bones. She has recently dealt with a lot of pain from metastatic bone lesions.
