Oliver Chidawu, the 68-year-old Minister of State for Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution has passed away.
Senator Chidawu, who was born in 1954, took office as mayor of Harare City in 1984 at the age of 29. He was the city’s youngest mayor in its history.
Engineer by profession and businessman Senator Chidhawu founded the Kuchi Group of Companies, served as chairman of the African Banking Corporation of Zimbabwe, and was non-executive chairman of the Manders Group.

Oliver Chidawu was named a self-made millionaire back in 2014. As a successful entrepreneur in Zimbabwe since the 90s. He was the founder of the Kuchi Group of companies. It is known for managing buildings and electrical contracts.
He was the youngest mayor of Harare in 1984 at the age of 29 and was a director in several companies. Further, he founded his contracting business in the 1980s, and with partners like Anglo American and Citi Group, he has developed some of Zimbabwe’s most important infrastructure. As a direct result of the enterprises he built from scratch, he now oversees more than 20,000 people.
Both BitumenConstruction Services and Heritage Insurance Company had Mr. Chidawu as a significant shareholder. When Heritage Investment Bank and First Merchant Bank amalgamated in 1997, he was a founding shareholder and director of that institution.
Mr. Chidawu was also the Manders Group’s non-executive chairman. Additionally, he served as chairman of African Banking Corporation Limited as well as numerous other publicly traded and privately held businesses in Zimbabwe that operate in a range of sectors, including finance, manufacturing, construction, waste management, and others.

Oliver Chidawu has been reported to have died following a heart attack this morning. Several media outlets, including his well-wishers, have started putting out their heartfelt tributes to the deceased.
However, there has been no update about his illness until today. Further, the statement by his family is yet to come, and his death cause is still unofficial.

On Tuesday, I met with him& we discussed about Joshua Nkomo Housing Cooperative. He admitted that I had been correct& clarified that we needed to rectify the issue.”
Similarly, The News Hawks tweeted, “Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Oliver Chidawu have died. The politician, engineer, and businessman was appointed to the metropolitan post in March 2019.”

The minister has never talked about his family, and they have chosen to stay out of the media light. Even after his death, the official confirmation by his family members has not come in.
