Melbourne Victory striker Ola Toivonen will have to prove his fitness at training on Saturday if he is to feature in Sunday’s game against the Central Coast Mariners.
Toivonen, who scored for Sweden at the 2018 World Cup, is yet to play for Victory because of a calf injury sustained after signing in the off-season.
He was not named in Victory’s squad during the week but because they play the last game of the round, the FFA advised coach Kevin Muscat that Toivonen could be brought into the squad after assessing him on Saturday.
If Toivonen were to play it is considered unlikely he would start. The 32-year-old only returned to full training this week and participated in match simulation on Friday.
Victory were without a recognised striker last week as Kenny Athiu battles a calf injury of his own. Kosta Barbarouses and Jai Ingham started up front in the win against Newcastle Jets.
Attacking midfielder James Troisi told reporters on Friday that the team would not be taking the Mariners lightly. Troisi has been in strong form for the Victory, who got their first win last week after going pointless the opening two games.
“We’ve got to take every game as we’re playing a Sydney FC. Every game has to be the same,” Troisi said.
“We are at home which is a massive difference. We should make this a fortress.
“We want the three points. Last week was a good hurdle, a good start and we want to keep that up.”
Spanish midfielder Raul Baena has been named in the squad after missing the grand final rematch due to a hamstring injury.
Nick Ansell dropped to the bench last week and was replaced by Thomas Deng, who was one of the best afield for the side which enjoyed a much-improved defensive performance.
