Every home Nina Farmer takes on is either guided by a charming backstory or acquires an unforgettable plot twist by the time she is finished—from seamlessly adding a contemporary wing to a 1920s colonial to revamping a 1880s shingle house while maintaining its historical quirks. Farmer’s own career hasn’t been exempt from such narrative turns, either.
Growing up in an artistic family in Westport, Connecticut, she adored childhood trips into New York City to the Kips Bay Decorator show house. Her father, who turns wooden bowls as a hobby, is a doctor. “Although I grew up with a design sense, I always thought I would become a physician,” she says.
Since, Farmer has designed residences throughout the greater Boston area and further afield in New England including beach residences on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, a vacation home in Vermont, and currently a classic six-bedroom 1920s stone estate in Westport.
Lounging with bare feet on the tufted living room sofa of her 19th-century Boston brownstone, Farmer admits, “I find it’s such a hard thing to summarize your aesthetic in a sentence, but I truly value the mix of old and new.” Indeed, her studio’s latest construction projects incorporate conversation-starting vintage touches gleaned from European antique dealers, overseas adventures, or iconic 20th-century design pieces.
