At the University of Minnesota, Olympian Branagh competed as a college player. For her work as an outside hitter, she was selected to the All-America Second Team on two occasions.

During her senior season, she was also named co-Player of the Year by the Big Ten Conference in volleyball. When she finished her undergraduate studies, she went on to represent the United States in the 2001 and 2003 Pan American Games, where she earned a Bronze Medal and was named the tournament’s leading scorer. After working as an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton for a season, Branagh joined the AVP circuit. As a member of the AVP circuit, she has had some success: she was awarded AVP Rookie of the Year in 2005, as well as the AVP Most Improved Player in 2006 and 2008.

She competed with Olympian Holly McPeak for the most of the 2006 season before teaming up with Elaine Youngs, who was McPeak’s partner at the 2004 Summer Olympics, for the rest of the 2006 season and the beginning of the next season. They were competitors in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where she finished second to Youngs. Branagh attributes her competitive attitude to her extended family, which includes basketball players, racing car racers, downhill snow skiers, bowlers, and show jumpers, among other sports. After a heated battle on the basketball court between Branagh and her uncle, whom she was unable to defeat, she decided to give up basketball and pursue volleyball instead.
