Later, when a student at Blackrock College, he won the 100- and 220-yard championships for Leinster Schools Athletics, as well as the same titles in the 1954 Irish Schools Athletics Championship. Brophy led Blackrock College to a Leinster Schools Senior Cup triumph over Belvedere in the same year.
In 1957 Five Nations Championship matches against France, Brophy made his international debut for Ireland and scored his first try. During a tour in May 1967 against Australia, he played his final test for Ireland.
Brophy’s first Lions call-up came for the 1959 tour of Australia and New Zealand, but he was injured and was unable to participate. Afterward, he participated in the 1962 South African tour with the Lions, earning two caps.
Brophy played a significant role in rugby administration, holding the positions of president of the IRFU, Blackrock College RFC, and the Leinster Branch. He received recognition from UCD’s “Team of the Century” and was also a talented golfer.
