Why Is The NFL Game In Spanish?

The NFL game is in Spanish because of the expanding fanbase, cultural relevance, part of the market expansion strategy, and language preferences.

The League has an increasing number of viewership in millions year-by-year. Besides, it is one of the most popular sports leagues in the country. It is a prime duty of the League to address the needs of various demographic citizens.

A nice number of the population in Central and South America has Espanol as their base language. In America, the Hispanic community is considered one of the fastest-growing demographics as compared to others.

With many matches being broadcast in Espanol, the League aims to reach this fastest-growing fanbase and address their preferences. NFL seems to have recognized the importance of inclusiveness of all sports enthusiasts.

Besides, there are many Hispanic players in the league and there were many in the past as well. Some of the names include Kiko Alonso, Joe Cardona, Roy Lopez, Malcolm Rodriguez, Chris Olave, Javier Arenas, Michael Davis, Christian Gonzalez and more.

There is a huge number of Hispanic fans that follow these players. On the other hand, cultural significance and relevance also play a part in this. American football is a larger and integral part of the culture in the United States. Adoption of sports has always been a way of assimilation into the broader community.

Similarly, preference for the language is also an important aspect of the Espanol broadcast of the games. Although many Hispanic individuals are proficient in English, many of them prefer to hear and watch the game in their own language.

Apart from that, it is also done to open up new market opportunities. It is a strategic approach to attract a significant number of advertisers, sponsors, and partnerships outside the United States.

Why Is The Super Bowl In Spanish?

The Super Bowl is in Espanol because of the expansion of the Spanish language fanbase and market extension strategy reasons. It was first aired in 2013.

Before, Fox Deportes not a single television network televised the Super Bowl matches in Espanol. the 2013 Super Bowl was the first SB game to be telecasted in the Espanol language in the United States.

There are many Hispanic audiences who would like to witness the broadcast of the team’s matches fighting for one of the greatest and most prestigious trophies of the National Football League in their own language.

This might be one of the many reasons to air the Lombardy Trophy match-ups between the best teams in the National Football League targeting Hispanic audiences across the country.

NFL Spanish Broadcast History

ESPN is the first network to provide the Espanol commentary of the NFL matches and their simulcast in the same language beginning in 2006.

It was the same year when Monday Night Football moved to ESPN and the network began to telecast those Monday matches in both English and Espanol (through ESPN Deportes).

Prior to the network’s initiation of the commentary in the language, there were hardly any networks that were to broadcast the National Football League matches in Espanol.

After that Fox’s expanded Espanol-language network known as Fox Deportes started airing some of the Fox games including playoffs and Super Bowl XLVIII directing the Hispanic community during the 2013 season.

Mun2 (which was later rebranded as Universo in 2015) is a sister cable network of NBC that started simulcasting specific Sunday Night Football games in the 2014 season while Telemundo Deportes still provided commentary for the Espanol broadcast.

Similarly, CBS which did not have any dedicated channel to cast the games in the Hispanic tongue, solely used SAP for the commentary.

The League has recently completed media rights deals and contract negotiations over 11 years worth $110 billion and the closing of the deal took place on 18 March 2021.

Cowboys Game In Spanish

Dallas Cowboys were the first team whose game was broadcast in Espanol beginning from the 2006 Monday Night Football game against the Giants.

Since that time, several games of the team have been aired in the language across ESPN Deportes, Fox Deportes, Telemundo, Amazon Prime, and more. In the 2023 seasons, there are more than five games of the franchise that will be aired targeting Espanol-speaking audiences.

The Cowboys have a huge fan following in Mexico and are often referred to as “Mexico’s NFL Team” on the other side of the border. Keeping the interest of such a huge fan following outside the country, the team signed a multi-year deal with TelevisaUnivision in August 2022.

The company is a leading media agency in the Spanish language across the world and is now under a multi-year commercial and media partnership with the team.

As per the agreement, the company is to become the franchise’s commercial agent in Mexico and increase the team’s brand presence in the Mexican market.

TelevisaUnivision also broadcasts the franchise’s preseason games including training camp reports, analysis, and interviews during the NFL regular season games.

The strategic partnership is estimated to benefit the team in expanding its fanbase in Mexico and is supposed to rocket commercial sales in the Hispanic market.
