The North Shropshire Conservative Association members selected Neil Shastri-Hurst, a Birmingham-based barrister, from a three-person shortlist. Due to a lobbying scandal, he will have to compete to keep the North Shropshire seat, which long-serving MP Owen Paterson vacated.

Shastri-Hurst appears to be the frontrunner in the December 16 by-election, with Mr. Paterson having won a 23,000-vote majority in the previous General Election, and the Conservatives have held the seat for almost a century.
