At 5-months-old, Elvis Duran Show’s Nate Marino was diagnosed with pulmonary stenosis, a congenital heart defect (CHD) where the valve that separates the right side of the heart from the lungs is narrowed.
He followed up with his cardiologist twice a year after an operation to open the valve, until October 2018, when his body’s right side became numb, and he knew he was having a stroke.
Nate was taken to a local hospital where he called as soon as possible to his best friend and colleague, Dr. Mehmet Oz, who encouraged him to seek care at the Irving Medical Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital / Columbia University.
Once at #NYP, Nate met with Cardiologist Dr. Matthew Lewis, who consulted with the Neurology team to determine that he had a paradoxical embolism, which resulted from the elevated right-heart pressures from a residual leak in the Valve and small heart gap called a PFO.
After a series of tests, Dr. Lewis told Nate he would need surgery to replace the leaky valve and close the residual hole, and he recommended Dr. Emile Bacha, Head of the Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery Division. Now as an adult, Nate is properly being treated for and learned how to care for the congenital heart defect he was diagnosed with as an infant.
In January, Dr. Bacha performed a successful PFO repair and valve replacement, and Nate has been on the road to recovery ever since! He is determined to spread the message of heart health and the importance of adult awareness in honor of # HeartMonth.When reunited with Drs.
