Malaysian politician and convicted criminal Dato Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haju Abdul Razak was the sixth prime minister of Malaysia.

Razak’s reign as prime minister lasted from April 3, 2009, to May 10, 2018, and many economic liberalization measures marked it.

These measures were cuts to government subsidies, reductions in preferential measures for ethnic Malays in business, and loosening restrictions on foreign involvement.

Razak was also ruthless towards his dissidents. In 2013, his government went after many of its critics on sedition charges, imprisoned the opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on a sodomy charge, and implemented a controversial Goods and Services Tax.

The former prime minister became implicated in a major corruption scandal in 2015 that involved the state investment firm 1 Malaysian Development Berhad.

This scandal led to many rallies calling for his resignation, which Razak replied to by tightening his grip on power.

The former prime mister suspended two newspapers and pushed the controversial National Security Council Bill that gave the prime minister unprecedented powers.

Razak’s various subsidy cuts led to soaring living costs, fluctuating oil prices, and a depreciation of the Malaysian currency. The controversy led to Razak being ousted from office after his party lost the 2018 election.
