Williams played college basketball for the University of Notre Dame, where his senior year saw him average 22.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, earning honorable mention All-American status.
He was selected by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft despite a pre-existing heart issue that prevented him from playing for two seasons.
Williams played with the Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, and Philadelphia 76ers throughout the course of his nine-year NBA career.
He participated in 456 games in all, scoring 2,884 points for an average of 6.3 points per contest. His retirement in 2003 was finally caused by persistent knee problems.
Williams worked as a coaching intern with the San Antonio Spurs after he stopped playing, and he then served as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Before taking over as head coach of the Phoenix Suns, he also held the positions of associate head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder and chief assistant coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.
