By the time he was getting to hit 8 years of age, Mike started collecting and studying weather maps that the Chicago weather legend Harry Volkman gave him.

Harry, who was WGN’s chief meteorologist at the time, became aware of the youngster’s keen interest through Mike’s father, Donald Hamernik, who worked at WGN as a staff musician for Bozo’s Circus and Artists’ Showcase.
