Mika, in 1997, became a correspondent for CBS News where she also hosted the day-to-day news program, Up to the Minute. Between her CBS duties, Mika briefly worked on MSNBC as co-host of the weekday afternoon show, HomePage.

The big break in her career came when she returned to CBS News to serve as the lead “Ground Zero” reporter for the 9/11 attacks. For years, she worked at CBS News as a section anchor, correspondent and backup for programs such as 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning.

Her stint with CBS ended in layoff, after she then joined MSNBC where she occasionally anchored Weekend Today. Just before renewing his contract to continue the show, fellow MSNBC employee Joe Scarborough in early 2007 offered him the role of co-host on his Morning Joe show, which replaced a similar morning TV show.. She accepted, joining him and Willie Geist as co-hosts.
