Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1943, Michael Hart grew up with a drummer father who owned a business selling instruments in California. Hart worked in the family business until he joined rock band the Grateful Dead in late 1967.

He left the band four years later when the group was involved in a dispute with his dad. Hart released his first solo album, “Rolling Thunder”, while on break from the Grateful Dead. In 1974, he rejoined the band and stayed until 1995 when the band officially broke up. Hart is credited on 15 albums through 2013, including “At the Edge”, “Music to be Born By” and “Planet Drum”. He embarked on several projects after the dissolution of the Grateful Dead. Hart, fellow Grateful Dead performer Bill Kreutzmann and several other musicians formed the Rhythm Devils in 2006. He toured with the Rhythm Devils and later the Mickey Hart Band in 2008. Hart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 for his contributions to the Grateful Dead. He has been married to his wife, lawyer Caryl, since 1990 and they have two children together.
