Barbadian-born British thoroughbred horse trainer Sir Michael Ronald Stoute (born 22 October 1945 in Barbados) is known for his success in flat racing. Stoute, whose father served as the Chief of Police for Barbados, left the island when he was 19 years old to work as an assistant to trainer Pat Rohan, and he went on to establish his own horse training business in 1972. Sandal, a horse owned by Stoute’s father, won at Newmarket Racecourse in Suffolk, England, on April 28, 1972, marking Stoute’s first victory as a trainer in the United Kingdom. Having won races all over the world since then, he has amassed a prestigious collection of wins, which includes victory in the Dubai World Cup, Breeders Cup, Japan Cup, and Hong Kong Vase. In 1998, he was knighted for his contributions to the tourist industry in Barbados. The first trainer in the twentieth century to win an English Classic in five consecutive seasons, he has been named Champion Trainer 10 times in his career to date (1981, 1986, 1989, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009).
He was the trainer of Kribensis, the only horse to have ever won the Triple Crown of Hurdling, which he accomplished in the 1989/90 racing season. Kribensis is the only horse to have ever won the Triple Crown of Hurdling. Stoute also trained Shergar, who is probably his most renowned horse, and who won the 1981 Epsom Derby before being kidnapped, most likely by the Irish Republican Army. When three horses trained by Sir John Stoute, Conduit, Tartan Bearer, and Ask, completed a rare clean sweep of the placings in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2009, it was hailed as a watershed moment in the history of the sport. The horses brought home a total of $1,787,000 out of the $2,008,945 in prize money awarded in Britain’s biggest horserace, the Grand National. Those victories enabled him to reclaim the title of Champion Trainer in 2009, earning him a total of £3,372,287 in prize money. In 2013, he was the trainer of Estimate, who won the Gold Cup for the Queen. Currently, Stoute trains horses at Freemason Lodge Stables and at Beech Hurst Stables, both of which are located on the Bury Road in the English town of Newmarket.
