Michael Brant Shermer (born September 8, 1954) is an American science writer, historian of science, and the founder of The Skeptics Society, as well as the Editor in Chief of the journal Skeptic, which is dedicated to debunking pseudoscientific and supernatural claims. Over 55,000 people are members of the Skeptics Society. Shermer frequently participates in discussions over pseudoscience and religion, emphasising his scientific scepticism. Shermer is also the producer and co-host of Exploring the Unknown, a 13-hour Fox Family television series.
         With his Skeptic column, he has been a monthly writer for Scientific American magazine since April 2001. He also serves on the American Council on Science and Health’s scientific advisory board (ACSH). Shermer claims to have been a fundamentalist Christian until abandoning his faith during his doctoral studies. He embraces the labels of atheist, nontheist, and agnostic, among others. He also identifies himself as a supporter of both humanist philosophy and moral science. He has voiced concerns about such titles for his lack of belief in God, believing that they are used to “pigeonhole” people, and prefers to be simply referred to be a sceptic.
