Melvin Douglas “Mel” Lastman (born March 9, 1933) is a former businessman and politician known as “Mayor Mel.” He founded the Bad Boy Furniture franchise. From 1972 until 1997, he was the mayor of the former city of North York, Ontario, Canada. North York, along with five other municipalities, was merged with the city of Toronto at the end of 1997. Lastman defeated incumbent Toronto mayor Barbara Hall in the mayoral election for the new “megacity.” He was re-elected in November 2000 and served until the municipal election in 2003, when he announced his retirement.
