Mega Millions Memes Explained, Twitter Flood As Jackpot Worth $1 Billion

The Mega Millions is an American multi-jurisdictional lottery game that was first released in 1996 under The Big Game and briefly rebranded as The Big Game Mega Millions six years later.

January 30, 2020, it is available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Big Game Mega Millions drawing was the inaugural one, which took place in 2002.

Following the retirement of The Big Game as the game’s name, all versions of what is now Mega Millions had a gold ball with six stars to symbolize the game’s inaugural membership. However, some lotteries put their emblem on the ball. The game was initially offered in six states.

Mega Millions Of Memes Flood Twitter

In the Mega Millions drawing on Tuesday night, no one took home the $810 million jackpot, bringing the total to an astounding $1.2 billion! The game has only ever exceeded $1 billion three times in recorded history—once in October 2018 and once more in January 2021.

Players in the $2 Mega Millions lottery must match six numbers to win the jackpot. However, smaller prizes are also available. The United States Virgin Islands, the District of Columbia, and 45 other states and territories offer access to the Mega Millions lottery, which has been running for 20 years.

No tickets matched all six numbers in Sunday night’s Mega Millions lottery drawing. Still, one $2.9 million ticket was purchased at a convenience store in Baker, San Bernardino County.

The Mega Millions lottery, which has been running for 20 years, is available to players in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

As thousands of players compete for the $1.2 billion jackpot, it is expected to be a popular draw on Friday. Many are responding to the large prize with jokes on Twitter.

Mega Millions Payout And Drawing-In Details

Even on holidays, the Mega Millions lottery is drawn every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. Eastern Time. Mega Millions is managed by a group of its 12 founding lotteries; the Georgia Lottery oversees the drawings, which take place at the WSB-TV studios in Atlanta, Georgia. John Crow and Carol Blackmon serve as the hosts.

The minimum advertised jackpot for Mega Millions is $40 million under the current regulations (which went into effect on October 28, 2017, with the first drawing taking place on October 31).

It is paid out in 30 graduated yearly installments with an annual increase of 5% (unless the cash option is selected; see below for variations by lottery on cash/annuity choice regulations). When there are no winners of the top prize, the jackpot grows.

The prize is a nominal value of yearly payments, as is customary in American lotteries. When a jackpot winner selects the cash value option (the standard option), they are paid the approximate present value of the payments.

The previous Mega Millions format started on October 19, 2013, and the first drawing followed three days later. Players must match five of the 70 white balls in the current Mega Millions game with the gold “MegaBall” drawn from the second field of 25 numbers.

The Mega Millions Jackpot Has Surpassed $1 billion In Value

The Mega Millions jackpot now stands at $1 billion. According to lottery officials, the estimated $1.02 billion grand prize for Friday night’s drawing will undoubtedly increase as more and more tickets are purchased as the drawing nears.

That pot of gold’s cash option would cost $602.5 million. No winning tickets were sold for the drawing on Tuesday night, which had an $830 million prize.

It would have been the third-largest Mega Millions payout and the fourth-largest lottery prize in the country’s history.

One ticket, purchased in South Carolina on October 23, 2018, was the winner of the biggest Mega Millions jackpot, worth $1.537 billion. This was the second-biggest lottery payment after the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot won on January 13, 2016.

History is made when multiple tickets are combined to win the greatest prize for a single combination of numbers. On March 5, 2019, a record Mega Millions jackpot was won, and the winner elected to maintain their anonymity by South Carolina law.
