Matt Carriker Veterinarian comes to the rescue of homeless animals

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s a veterinarian!

Superman is known for his supernatural powers and fighting in tights and a cape. Usually, he’s battling Lex Luthor and steering clear of the ever-immobilizing kryptonite. But brute strength and lightning speed do not always a hero make. A real-life superman can don scrubs and carry a scalpel and save just as many lives. Example: Matt Carriker.

The veterinary profession runs in Carriker’s family and is part of his inspiration.

“My dad is actually a vet, and I watched him doing it and I decided that’s what I should do also,” he said.

After graduation from Texas A&M with his veterinary license in 2012, Carriker and his family relocated to Boerne, Texas, where he started practicing at a small animal clinic.

Although he finds veterinary medicine fulfilling, Carriker says he was surprised by some of the cold hard facts of animal medicine.

“I didn’t realize how many homeless animals there are, and they euthanize hundreds a year; that was eye-opening for me. And a lot of them are healthy animals.”

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports there are 218 million pets in the U.S. and Americans spend an average of $500 a year on their pets. With the cost of vaccinations, food and other medical services, it’s no wonder so many animals are homeless and without funds to treat them.

After seeing firsthand how many animals don’t end up in deserving homes, he began to wonder if there wasn’t another way to help homeless animals.

“Every vet has taken a handful of animals under their wing and completed surgeries or treatments for free just because they want to help, but we can’t do that every time. We can’t afford it. We have families to feed and bills to pay,” he explained. Then an idea popped into Carriker’s head that changed his entire life in the span of a year.

Social media superpowers

Carriker says he started his first YouTube channel, Demolition Ranch, while in vet school. Demolition Ranch is a channel all about guns. He films himself in different firearm scenarios and teaches about guns along the way. It is now the fourth-largest gun channel on YouTube and the channel just passed 1 million subscribers, according to Carriker. With the success of his first YouTube channel, Carriker began to imagine a way to use the power of social media for something other than fun.

“I began to wonder if I could make videos that actually have a positive influence on the world besides just making entertainment.”

In February 2014, the YouTube channel Vet Ranch was born.

Initially, he planned to use the funds generated by the YouTube channel to pay for homeless animal treatments but quickly realized money would only go so far. He could only treat one to two animals a month when he had hoped to treat as many as he could.

“I was getting ready to quit, then people started asking if they could donate money to the treatments,” he said. “I started a non-profit organization, we began accepting donations from the public and now we can pretty much treat as many animals as time allows.”

Superhero in action

Carriker films his patients before, during and after treatments so donors can actually see where their money is going. His cases range anywhere from dogs hit by cars to homeless hedgehogs to horses in need of a dentist. Once the treatments are completed they move on to the next step, a forever home.

Currently, the channel has more than 300,000 subscribers. It has been so successful he has added three additional veterinarians to the mix to keep up with the number of cases and donations received.

“Vet Ranch allows us to treat way more animals than if we were doing it all out of pocket,” he added.

Ever devoted to his craft, Carriker works around 30 hours a week as a veterinarian at the clinic where he is employed and an additional 30 hours a week being a YouTube master, video editor and completing Vet Ranch treatments and surgeries.

Someday he plans to take Vet Ranch to another level and spend his time solely fixing homeless animals that wouldn’t have had a chance without his help.

“The way I see it is any vet can vaccinate a dog. If I don’t vaccinate a dog, the owner will drive them to another vet clinic and they’ll give them vaccines, but not just any vet can fix homeless dogs because they don’t have the funds to do it. If I’m not there to fix a homeless dog, it might not get fixed and it might get euthanized instead. I think I can serve a better purpose in doing this.”
