Matraca Berg’s parents are songwriter/session singer Icie Calloway and Ron Berg. Her mother, Icie, had dreams of a musical career, and despite facing challenges, she was a tenacious and spirited individual. Matraca once described her mother as “real spunky,” a testament to her resilient spirit.
Icie’s life was not without its share of hardships, including being a single mother for much of Matraca’s upbringing. Though Ron Berg, Matraca’s father, was present for a time, Icie primarily raised Matraca on her own. She was known for her no-nonsense approach to life, a characteristic that Matraca fondly remembers.
Matraca’s family was deeply rooted in music. Her aunt was a backup singer, and she had an uncle who was a skilled steel guitarist. It was a household filled with melodies and creativity, and Matraca couldn’t have avoided the influence of country music and Nashville even if she had tried. She once quipped, “It’s in my blood.” Her love for music and songwriting was ignited at a young age, particularly when she became infatuated with her aunt’s piano at the age of eight or nine. This early fascination with music laid the foundation for her future as a songwriter.
Tragically, Matraca Berg’s mother, Icie Calloway, passed away in 1985 due to cancer. This loss was undoubtedly a significant moment in Matraca’s life, and it left a lasting impact on her.
