In 2017, he made his relationship with director/producer and arts patron Helen Randag official. Randag has a charitable foundation to support the arts in honour of her grandfather who was an art collector. She set up the foundation after getting an inheritance from him at the age of 24.
In 2010, she received an award for Arts Philanthropy: the Prince of Wales medal. Randag is the youngest ever recipient of the award.
Previously married, she now lives in California and has her own film production company, Midheaven Productions. In 2014 she wrote, directed and produced a short film Portrait of a Star, which premiered at the New York City International Film Festival.
During an interview with Herald in 2016, henderson said he’d love to get married and become a father.
“I’ve always wanted kids, but I never felt ready. I wasn’t mature enough to have them earlier. It would’ve felt more of a burden, whereas today I’m at an age where spending time with kids or my nephews is wonderful. But I’m not going to rush out and do it for the sake of it. I don’t think having a family is the answer to anything, but more a complement to life. I’d rather find the right woman first, but life’s funny – I might find someone and they can’t have kids. So I don’t want to get hung up on the idea because then if I met someone who couldn’t, I’d feel like I was being denied something.”
Martin Henderson Everest
On the morning of May 10, 1996, climbers (Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin) from two expeditions start their final ascent toward the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever encountered by man. Challenged by the harshest conditions imaginable, the teams must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against nearly impossible odds.
Initial release: 16 September 2015 (Egypt)
Director: Baltasar Kormákur
Based on: Left For Dead: My Journey Home from Everest; by Beck Weathers
Box office: 203.4 million USD
Everest is an acclaimed film about the 1996 alpine tragedy. In the film, Henderson plays the character Andy “Harold” Harris, a mountaineer who is a guide for Rob Hall’s company, who was one of eight who died on the mountain in May 1996 when climbing parties were caught in a storm.
Being from Auckland, he isn’t a stranger to the outdoors or high altitudes. The onetime Shortland Street star had been to the Himalayan foothills before the Everest shoot took him there. However, his most hair-raising great outdoors story involves being chased by a rhino in the Nepalese jungle. He says, “I actually thought it was going to be my last breath,” he laughs down the line from somewhere in Georgia where he is playing a vet in family movie ‘Miracles from Heaven’ opposite Jennifer Garner.
“I thought this is going to read so bad in a New Zealand article. ‘Whatever happened to Stuart Neilson? Oh he got killed by a rhino’. Kind of exotic and pathetic at the same time.”
Martin Henderson Grey’s Anatomy
The medical drama series focuses on a group of doctors at a hospital in Seattle, including several who began their careers at the facility as interns. One of the doctors and the show’s namesake, Meredith Grey, is the daughter of a famous surgeon. She struggles to maintain relationships with her colleagues, particularly the hospital’s one-time chief of surgery, Richard Webber, due to a pre-existing relationship between them — Webber and Meredith’s mother had a personal relationship when Meredith was young.
First episode date: 27 March 2005
Theme song: Cosy in the Rocket
Network: American Broadcasting Company
Spin-off: Private Practice
Henderson joined Grey’s Anatomy in season 12 as Dr. Nathan Riggs, after the departure of Patrick Dempsey. After three years on the series, he exited in a rather happy ending as compared to the normal way of writing off characters by killing them. In the show, Riggs decides to start a new life with his second-time fiancée Megan (Abigail Spencer) and her adopted son. He says, “I only had a short-term contract with the show”. “This is my final year so I was expecting Nathan’s storyline to be wrapped up. Bringing in Megan and tying up loose ends, provided a reason. That was always intended when they brought Megan back with a twist.”

Martin Henderson the Ring
Interviewed by Neil Davey
Horror movie “The Ring” is the US remake of Hideo Nakata’s “Ringu”, a Japanese horror about a nightmarish videotape.
The film stars Naomi Watts as a journalist investigating the tape along with her friend Noah, played by New Zealand actor Martin Henderson.
Were you a fan of the original film?
I hadn’t seen it. After getting the part, I read about the origins but I waited a while to see it because I didn’t want the original performance to instruct my own. I wanted to make sure it was my own interpretation of our script.
When you did finally see it, did they show it to you on video?!
Yes, they did, the b*******!
Are you a horror fan?
Not generally. Most horror films fail to scare me. I think “The Ring” plays more as a psychological thriller. It’s smarter, there’s more character development and some of the themes explored go a little deeper. I realized that, if done well, this could be a pretty great film.
Was the atmosphere on set creepy?
Not really. A lot of the “scare factor” comes with the editing, the effects, and the music. There were moments when Naomi and I would look at each other and say, “This is embarrassing, people are going to laugh.” You just hope that somebody makes it scary or you’re going to look like an idiot!
You’re from New Zealand but working in LA – and sounding more American these days…
[Laughs] The accent got lost somewhere along the way. I’m a little embarrassed about it. When I arrived in LA I assumed I’d be able to put on the American accent. It proved difficult so I had six months working with a dialect coach and it’s become a habit. I do a really bad New Zealand accent now! But I’m sure I can get it back. And bizarrely, as you come to LA to work, the film world goes to New Zealand…
It is strange. As soon as I got off the plane in LA, I heard they’d cast the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and that it was all being shot in New Zealand! That was pretty ironic.
It seems to be a good time for Aussie and New Zealand actors in Hollywood…
Well, they don’t just open the door because you’ve got a New Zealand passport – Sam Neill, then Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce – I think maybe they’ve forged the way. I think it’s a very New Zealand/Aussie attitude: if they can, I can do it. And possibly the competitive spirit. It’s a great challenge to come from little New Zealand and beat the odds in Hollywood.
