Martika’s Kitchen, her second album, peaked at number 111 on the Billboard Top Albums chart. The title tune gained modest radio in the United States, peaking at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100.
However, the album fared better in other countries, peaking at number 15 on the UK Albums Chart and number 9 in Australia. Additional hits from the album included “Coloured Kisses” and “Martika’s Kitchen.” Patti LaBelle recorded another song from the album, “Temptation,” on her album Burnin’.
Martika first appeared as the lounge singer Dahlia Mendez in the crime thriller TV series Wiseguy in 1990. This was her fourth and final season on the show, where she co-starred with Steven Bauer, who took over for Ken Wahl.
Martika left the music industry in 1991/1992, feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of fame, resulting in a drop in her public awareness. Martika released a best hits compilation CD titled The Best of Martika: More Than You Know in 1997.
Martika performed background vocals to different projects and provided lyrics for other artists during the early 2000s Latin music boom. Despite these accomplishments, she received little notice from big labels as a solo performer.
Instead, she concentrated on communicating with her followers via her website martika.net, which she launched in 2001. Martika released a self-made remix of a new song named “The Journey” and recorded another tune called “Monday” for a planned solo album that never came to fruition.
