Marouane Fellaini Biography

Fellaini was born Marouane Fellaini-Bakkioui in Etterbeek, Brussels, Belgium on November 22, 1987 to Abdellatif and Hafida Fellaini. His father, Abdellatif, was a former goalkeeper. He played for Moroccan clubs Raja Casablanca and Hassania d’Agadir before becoming a bus driver after emigrating to Belgium with his wife in search of a better life. He currently serves as his son’s agent and can attend his matches.

Growing up, Fellaini excelled in track events as well as football. It is reported that he would usually choose to go to school rather than ride the bus like his peers would due to his abilities. At the age of 8, he joined the Anderlecht academy where he played as a striker.

In 1997, at the age of 10, Fellaini left Anderlecht to join Mons because his father had found a new job in this city. He spent three years in Mons before moving back to R. Francs Borains where he spent two years. Between 2002 and 2004, Fellaini played for Sporting Charleroi before signing his first professional contract with Standard Liege after playing for their youth team for two years. At 17, Fellaini has been touted as Belgium’s next big release. He was now playing as a box-to-box midfielder who had exceptional stamina and heading ability, thanks to his height.

In 2008, he won the Ebony shoe, an award given annually in Belgium to the best African or African-born players in the Belgian Pro League. In the same year, following interest from clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Marouane Fellaini opted to join Everton for a record fee of around £15m.

Fellaini was money well spent for the Merseyside club as he hit the ground running. He scored 9 midfield goals in his first season under manager David Moyes and was named Young Player of the Year by Everton. He then played a total of 177 games over a 6-year spell for Everton before joining Moyes as a replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

United paid Everton £27.5m for Fellaini’s services but the Belgium midfielder is yet to live up to the expectations United were hoping for. He only managed 15 starts that season and was generally criticized by supporters who disliked Moyes’ managerial style.

Since then, Marouane Fellaini has never really won back the hearts of Manchester United fans, despite playing for three different managers at the club.

Binet, who was crowned Miss Liège in 2011 before becoming a runner-up in the Miss Belgium beauty pageant, started dating Fellaini while playing for Standard Liege. Throughout their relationship, the pair are believed to be inseparable, with some reports speculating the couple exchanged vows. The couple, however, separated amicably in 2012 following their move to Manchester United.
