Maria Mena Biography
Maria Viktoria Mena is a Norwegian pop musician, best known for her single “You’re the Only One” which charted in multiple countries. Maria Mena’s musical career launched in 2002, when at 16 years old, she got her first big break with the release of her debut single “My Lullaby.” She quickly progressed and secured her spot as one of Scandinavia’s most successful recording artists with a catalogue of hits including “You Are The Only One,” “Just hold Me,” “All This Time,” among others.
Maria Mena was born in Oslo, Norway on February 19th. 1986. With international hit singles like “All This Time”, “You’re the Only One”, “Just Hold Me” and “Miss You Love” she is highly regarded for her confessional song-writing and personal lyrics. In the autumn of 2011 she will release her fifth studio album.
Her father, an American drummer, played in several bands in Oslo, influencing Mena to write and record her own music. After pleading with her father, he contacted some acquaintances in the music industry to record a demo. Presenting his daughter’s songs to several record companies, Sony Music signed Mena to their label. At only 14 she recorded “My Lullaby”, an instant smash hit in her home country. After the success of the song, she released her debut album, “Another Phase” in Norway, which went on to reach platinum status.
In 2004 Mena released her sophomore album “Mellow”. This led to her first international album release and a breakthrough into the worldwide singles charts that year with the highly successful and lyrically explicit single “You’re the Only One”. International superstar Kanye West was one of many to praise the song, naming it “song of the summer”. The single appeared on Billboard charts, making #25 on the U.S. Top 40 Mainstream. In July 2004, Mena made an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman to promote “White Turns Blue”, a combination of her two previously released albums especially made for the American market.
2005 and 2006 saw the release of Apparently Unaffected in several European countries, fronted by the singles “Just Hold Me” and “Miss You Love”. After significant success in Germany, Holland, Austria, Switzerland and Norway, the album earned her three Norwegian Grammy nominations and several international award nominations. For the first time in her career Mena went on a critically acclaimed European tour of sold-out concerts and festivals earning her a reputation as a powerful and talented live artist.
Having worked on her three first studio albums with Norwegian producer Arvid Solvang, Mena started collaborating with Martin Sjølie in early 2008 on what would become her fourth and perhaps most personal studio album, “Cause and Effect”. The album’s first single, “Belly Up” had its radio premiere mid-June 2008 on Norwegian radio. The first international single was “All This Time” and the album was internationally released on September 26, 2008. This album garnered her a Norwegian Grammy for Best Female Artist and continued her success throughout Europe.
Mena’s songs has appeared in numerous tv-series and movies. In her hiatus year of 2010 she wrote the title song for acclaimed director Bent Hamer’s award-winning movie “Home for Christmas”. The song was her biggest hit in Norway to date, going triple platinum and reaching the number one spot on both radio and singles charts.
Her song “Sorry” was featured on the third season of the American tv-show “So You Think You Can Dance” and “What’s Another Day” was featured during the fourth season.
In may 2011 Mena released her latest single “This Too Shall Pass”. Her fifth studio album will be released this autumn.
