Marco Asensio (born: Marco Asensio Willemsen) is a Spanish professional footballer born on 21 January 1996 in Palma, Spain. He plays as an attacking midfielder and winger for Real Madrid and the Spain national team.

Asensio started out with Mallorca before joining Real Madrid in November 2014. He was loaned to his former club as well as to Espanyol before returning to Real Madrid. He has since earned several honours that include two Champions League trophies.

He has also played for his country Spain, making his debut in 2016. He was in the 2018 World Cup squad for Spain in Russia.

The Spain midfielder was born in a family of two to a Dutch mother by the name Maria Gertruida Margaretha Willemsem and a Spanish father called Gilberto Asensio. His father, Gilberto, was also a football player. He represented Barakaldo CF as a youth playing as an attacking midfielder.

Marco began playing at Mallorca and after being scouted by Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, he made his senior debuts with Mallorca’s reserves in the 2013–14 season in Tercera División. On 27th October 2013, he made his first competitive appearance for the first team on as he played the last six minutes in a 1–3 away loss against Recreativo de Huelva for the Segunda División championship.

Spanish club, Real Madrid reached an agreement in principle to sign Asensio on 24 November 2014 and on 5 December the deal was officially announced, with the player signing a six-year deal for a €3.9 million fee and remaining with the Bermellones on loan until the end of the campaign.

After making the whole pre-season with Real Madrid, Asensio was loaned to RCD Espanyol in La Liga on 20 August 2015. On September 19, he played his first game in the competition, featuring 86 minutes in a 3–2 success at Real Sociedad, and he ended his spell at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat with 12 overall assists.

He made his return to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the 2016/2017 season. His first competitive appearance took place on 9 August, as he played the full 120 minutes and scored through a 25-meter effort in a 3–2 win against fellow Spaniards Sevilla FC for the UEFA Super Cup. He made his first league start 12 days later, netting the second goal in a 3–0 success at Real Sociedad.

Over his first season, he featured 23 times, scoring three times as the club won the national championship for the first time since 2012. He added as many goals in that year’s UEFA Champions League, including one in the final against Juventus F.C. (4–1) to give the Spaniards their 12th title in the latter competition.

Asensio’s first goal of the 2017–18 season was with a 25-yard finish in a 3–1 win against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou, for the Supercopa de España. He repeated the feat with a similarly spectacular effort in the second leg, in a 5–1 aggregate triumph.

He extended his contract until 2023 on 28 September 2017. He scored Real Madrid’s 6,000th goal in the Spanish top division on 18 February 2018, in a match where he contributed with a brace to a 5–3 away win over Real Betis

He ended the 2017/2018 season with Real Madrid with 11 appearances while scoring one goal during that season’s Champions League. The club won its third consecutive and 13th overall title in the competition.

Marco Asensio could sign for Chelsea as part of Eden Hazard Deal

Marco Asensio could move to Chelsea as part of the deal to take Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, it is being claimed.

According to Onda Madrid, as cited on El Partido de la Una, Real Madrid would be willing to include the Spaniard if Mateo Kovacic’s permanent transfer to Stamford Bridge does not go through.

It has already been suggested that the Croatian is likely to be offered to Chelsea as part of the deal in a bid to lower the Blues’ asking price for Hazard.

However, it remains to be seen what the future lies for Kovacic, with talks underway over a potential deal.

Should Chelsea and Real fail to come to an agreement regarding Kovacic, Asensio is the man likely to come into the equation.

Hazard is said to have agreed terms over a move to the Bernabeu at the end of the season, bringing an end to his six-year stay in London.
