Maddie Poppe wowed the judges with her rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound” during the Top 14 round. Katy Perry complimented Joni Mitchell, while Luke Bryan lauded her adept blending of modal and falsetto, emphasizing her expertise and maturity as a musician.

Prior to the American Idol finale, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds designated May 20, 2018, “Maddie Poppe Day” in honor of her achievements.

Poppe wowed the audience with her performance of her winning tune, “Going Going Gone,” written by Mitch Allan, Lindy Robbins, and Julia Michaels. Katy Perry officially declared her decision to vote for Poppe after performing “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac.

Poppe was crowned the winner of American Idol on May 21, with Caleb Lee Hutchinson finishing second and Gabby Barrett finishing third. Hutchinson disclosed during the show that he and Poppe were in a love connection, which added to the atmosphere.

Poppe’s triumph was historic because she was the first female winner since Candice Glover in the eleventh season and the first Caucasian female winner since Carrie Underwood in the fourth season.
