Leigh Wood, a skilled British boxer who held the WBA featherweight belt from 2021 to 2023 for two years, has attracted much attention for his prowess in the ring.
He has won regional featherweight championships, including the Commonwealth and British titles, and as of October 2021, he was considered to be one of the best featherweights competing today by reputable sources like BoxRec, The Ring magazine, and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board.
Leigh Wood Bio
The WBA officially scheduled a mandatory title defense on April 6, 2022, pitting Wood against their “Super” champion Leo Santa Cruz. The boxers had 30 days to come to an agreement to avoid a purse bid.
Santa Cruz was given another order by the WBA to take against Wood on July 19, 2022, and was given a day to respond. Santa Cruz asked for a waiver so that he could fight WBC featherweight champion Rey Vargas instead, but this was turned down.
When Wood’s team declined Santa Cruz’s offer of step-aside money, the WBA scheduled a purse bid for August 12. The WBA rejected Matchroom Boxing’s petition for an equal prize split.
In the end, the parties agreed to pursue separate matches, and on August 24, 2022, the WBA gave its approval for Wood to fight Mauricio Lara for his second defense of the WBA (Regular) championship.
