She taught Afrikaans at the Roggebaai Training College after receiving her drama degree in 1972. She traded the Cape for Gauteng (the then Transvaal) at the end of 1974 and worked as an actor under Robin Malan with’ Pact Playwork’ from 1975 to 1976. It was part of the curriculum of the time that prescribed work was performed for school children and two actors ‘ teams traveled from school to school.
She took part-time teaching by the day and waiting by night at the end of her two-year agreement. She served Katinka Heyns and Chris Barnard at the restaurant she worked at during one of those nights. At the time Heyns was working as the director of a TV series‘ Phoenix & Kie’ (with Barnard as scriptwriter). Jana Cilliers played the role of a cabaret singer in this series.
Cilliers suggested at one stage that Heyns hire Rauch to sing for her, and Rauch became the singing voice of Cilliers ‘ “ghost.” The songs by the songwriter Koos du Plessis have been used in the series ‘ soundtrack and their version of the song-‘ Kinders van die wind’-has been recorded in one take. The musical arranger and director were Johnny Boshoff.
The song became an instant hit after the launch of the first episode of the 1979 series–which ran for 13 weeks. From seven record companies, Rauch received provides. Mariana Malan explains how it influenced her when she first heard Rauch singing ‘ Kinders van die Wind’ in the’ Beeld / Burger’ of January 5, 2011. It was struck by parades on Springbok Radio and Radio 5 (now 5fm)
‘Encore! Brel’ and ‘Met permissie gesê’
The singer and songwriter Anton Goosen asked her in October 1979 to accompany him on a trip after the achievement of’ Kinders van die wind’ and her’ Debut’-album. Goosen also set up a name with his initial Afrikaans music and his hit’ Kruidjie-Roer-my-nie’ for himself at that moment. It has often been the case before him that German and other foreign songs have been translated and published.
Taube Kushlick, the theater’s’ grand dame,’ heard of Rauch around this moment. In 1980 she asked her for an audition as she was looking for someone in a fresh production with Ann Hamblin and Ferdie Uphof to interpret the music of the Flemish songwriter Jacques Brel. Kushlick rapidly decided that this “boeremeisie” (Afrikaner girl) was the right option for her new production, as she called Rauch.
It was a huge success and was playing in Hillbrow’s Chelsea Theater for six months. A series that followed,’ The Best of Brel,’ followed in 1983. In 1981 she was also in the cast of Hennie Aucamp’s’ Met permissie gesê.’ “The show was the first cabaret for Afrikaans.” With Janice Honeyman in the cast as director and individuals like Amanda Strydom, Rina Nienaber, Gerben Kamper, and Bill Curry,
Christopher Torr develops as a songwriter
Christopher Torr, an English-speaking husband, wrote a song in English about bank robber André Stander in South Africa in 1984, who had acquired nearly legendary fame. The song has never been registered or played.
When someone gave Rauch a cassette recording of the Austrian Udo Jürgens ‘ music, at first she did not listen to it, deciding to concentrate on initial Afrikaans content instead of translating foreign songs. Torr started listening to the German songs and wrote Afrikaans phrases for one of the songs that were eventually recorded and published as one of Rauch’s.
Torr still offers the most effective material from Rauch. Rauch’s song “Hot Gates” was an English translation of the Afrikaans war poem “Lied Van Die Kinders,” Rauch conducted a mixed English-African version of the song with fellow South African performers at the Skouspel in 2008: Bok van Blerk, Eden, Theuns Jordaan, Shine4, Nianell, Juanita du Plessis and tenor Jannie Moolman.
