Laurent Gbagbo Net Worth, Income, Salary, Earnings, Biography

In the Gagnoa Bété language, Gbagbo is pronounced as [??ba??bo] in French, and he was born on May 31, 1945. He served as President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire from 2000 until his arrest in April 2011, when he was imprisoned.

Gbagbo is a historian by training, as well as an amateur chemist and physicist. He was imprisoned in the early 1970s and again in the early 1990s, and he spent most of the 1980s in exile in France as a consequence of his labour union activity. Gbagbo formed the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) in 1982 and campaigned unsuccessfully for President against Félix Houphouet-Boigny in 1990, at the time of the country’s transition to multi-party democracy. In 1990, he was elected to the National Assembly of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. President Laurent Gbagbo declared victory in the October 2000 presidential election after Robert Gué, the leader of a military junta, banned other prominent candidates from competing.

The Ivorian people went to the streets and forced Gué to step down. Gbagbo was then sworn in as President of the Republic. Immediately after the 2010 presidential election, Gbagbo filed a challenge against the results, claiming fraud. He has asked for the annulment of results from nine different areas throughout the nation. Electoral observers, the international community, the African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States unanimously proclaimed Alassane Ouattara to be the winner, and he was subsequently acknowledged as such. However, the Constitutional Council, which, according to Article 94 of the Ivorian Constitution, both resolves complaints and announces the results of presidential elections, ruled that Gbagbo had won the presidential election in question.
