Laura Brehm Interview

Hi Laura, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Laura: Hi! I have been good, thanks! I’m currently sitting in my apartment/studio in Boulder, CO looking out the window on a rainy day with a cup of black tea, so things couldn’t get much better right now.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Parallel”?

Laura: “Parallel” is very much based around the vocals. I wanted the song to be not only vocally driven, but embellished with vocal effects and ad-libs that are a central element to the instrumental as well. The song can be interpreted as being about romantic love or platonic friendship. I just wanted to talk about the feeling of meeting someone who really understands you because they are on the same wavelength as you.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Laura: I was inspired by a particular friendship in my life (he knows who he is). Even without speaking, we always know what the other person is thinking/feeling and we always seem to agree on everything. It was almost eerie at first, but it’s become a very special relationship and I know that meeting someone you can relate to in this way doesn’t happen every day.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Laura: I didn’t release a video for the single “Parallel”, however I did release one for the title track of the EP it’s on, “Breathe”. I worked with Colorado based film company CinemaRaven and actor Jeremy Cumrine to bring the story of this song to life. We spent 2 days in the mountains shooting it. The video can be found on my YouTube channel!

The single comes off your new album Breathe – what’s the story behind the title?

Laura: The story behind the title of the EP is mainly for the title track; it’s essentially about learning to let go of a relationship that was life-changing, such as a first love. As portrayed in the music video, you see the happy couple suddenly take a turn for unknown reasons, and the emotions run wild. But then, after feeling and processing all of it, you remind yourself to breathe and realize that you will be okay. The title of the EP also works with the other 3 songs, “Awake & Dreaming”, “Dance of Love”, and “Parallel” also because they are about living in the moment, being free, and finding hope; things that returning to the breath in meditation allow us to do.

How was the recording and writing process?

Laura: The writing process literally took years for this one. The songs kept evolving and changing over time as I was finding my solo sound. Many songs got cut and replaced by newer ones I had written, but the concept had been there the whole time. Then, when I felt I had the final 4 songs, I decided to self-produce it, though I have not had much experience doing this other than recording/engineering my own vocals. I learned production as I went, and at times it was challenging but overall, I felt very inspired and motivated while making it. The recording/production process finished up in just a few months.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else than when you are writing your own original material?

Laura: Yes, because when I’m collaborating with someone else, I have to adhere to the style and sound of my colleague, and at the same time keeping an element of my style and sound so that they blend. This isn’t a bad thing; it’s actually great because I think the more people involved, the more interesting the outcome is. I prefer to approach collaborations writing from scratch together in the same room rather than sending files back and forth, but either way can work. When I’m writing my own material, the sky is the limit as far as what I’m trying to accomplish with the sound because I’m the only person who has to be happy with it. I tend to go more experimental and out there when it comes to my solo material especially in the song structure, and I also like to do more folk/acoustic music because most of my collaborations are in the EDM realm. It’s a nice contrast to be doing both collaborations and solo work.

Would you be diving into friendship on this record? Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Laura: Yes, friendship was one of the themes for the ‘Breathe’ EP, and it also included many of my other favorite subjects to write songs about: passion, dreaming, self awareness, healing the past, taking chances, falling in love, finding truth, hope, and living in the moment. Because I have not released a lot of solo material in recent years, I was able to choose my favorite themes and ideas to put my best foot forward with re-introducing my audience to my non-EDM music.

Any plans to hit the road?

Laura: Not currently. At the moment I’m staying extremely busy with studio work; the next solo stuff, new collaborations, expanding my YouTube channel, etc. Performance is definitely one of my favorite aspects about being a musician though, and soon I will be developing my live set.

What else is happening next in Laura Brehm’s world?

Laura: On top of keeping up with everything involved in my artist work, I have also started my own record label, Electric Bird Records, which I will be working on developing. You can also find me hanging out outdoors in beautiful Colorado, where I am based for the time being.
